| Beaded Jewelry
In the past, and for many modern cultures in the present, beaded jewelry has held a significant role in society. Not only has beaded jewelry been worn for fashion and stylistic reasons, but has been used as a symbol for an individuals rank in the tribe, a way of creating alliances among people and different groups through gift giving, and as objects to represent the identity of the group as a whole.
However, for most people today, beaded jewelry is simply a fashion accessory where colors and patterns are not chosen for particular meanings (with the exception of birthstones), but chosen based on personal preferences. Beaded jewelry techniques have a long history in human culture, resulting in stunning pieces of expert craft and skill. Consequently, when choosing your handmade beaded jewelry, you have many choices from craftsmen and materials.
Glass Beads- Small glass beads are used to create more complicated structures and are often called "seed beads". Native Americans are known for their use of seed beads, creating intricate tapestries and designs in their products. Round glass beads, or "druks", are perfect for simple bracelets and jewelry components such as earrings. Although most glass beads are mass-produced, many are hand painted or blown individually. For personal and unique beaded jewelry, opt for the latter.
Pearl- One of the few stones that man cannot improve on; pearls are nature’s gems and come as they are. Natural pearls are rare and very expensive, choose instead freshwater or cultured pearls that are grown naturally on pearl farms. Pearls are exquisite as earrings, necklaces, and bracelets and come in every color of the rainbow.
